CRISIS INTERVENTION UNIT (CIU)

The Midlothian Police Department’s CIU stands for “Crisis Intervention Unit”.  The purpose of CIU is to positively respond to, and successfully interact with, those exhibiting mental health, intellectual deficiencies, or dementia issues. The CIU is further designed to proactively assist the client in maintaining a health mental state and to be better able to respond to the greatest assistance possible when those in need are in crisis. The primary goal is to better assist citizens with disabilities through an information sharing program that provides immediate access to critical information our first responders need when they encounter those in crisis. Often, those in crisis are not capable to effectively communicate and assist the responding officer. The person may not be able to identify themselves, may appear lost/disoriented, or might act in a manner that could be misinterpreted by first responders. Disabilities addressed include Alzheimers/Dementia, Autism, Intellectual Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health, and other related issues that may cause a person to have diminished mental function.

The MPD began putting the CIU concept together at the end of 2020 and fielded the program in April of 2021. As of now, there are almost 90 clients that have served, or attempted to serve at least one time. Many are contacted at least once per week. As the program, a first in Ellis Co, has developed and become better known, Ellis County residents and businesses have been interested in how to donate to the program.

In partnership with Heroes of Midlothian Foundation, community stake holders may donate to the CIU program through HMF. HMF is an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charity. 100% of all donations from this campaign (minus credit card processing fees; we can’t avoid those) will go directly toward Midlothian PD CIU Program . All donations are tax deductible as allowed by applicable law.
